Foie Gras - Greasy Liver "Foie Gras"! Translated into English, this means "greasy liver", and that's exactly what it is; a pathological liver. As a medical scientist and animal behaviourist, I cannot in any way condone or support the production or the consumption of the delicacy known as Foie Gras. It is a travesty that my own country still imports this highly-prized and highly-priced commodity.
Birds are force-fed with a cheap, stodgy mass of nutrient-deprived pulp to an end-point where their livers become pathological. Imagine having a tube forced down your throat, and your stomach filled to the point where it wants to burst. Imagine the discomfort. Imagine the pain. You would want to throw up. The birds can't! Imagine how they feel! And imagine how you would feel when your liver becomes so huge that it weighs you down and makes the slightest movement painful. And when the toxins released by the pathological liver course through your blood; making you sick, jaundiced, headachy and shaky. Imagine all of this in yourself. Now, imagine it all in a bird a fraction of your size! Who, in their right mind, would consume anything pathological or diseased? Yet, millions of people all over the world do just this very thing by eating Foie Gras. Recently, this delicacy has been shown to have very strong links to Alzheimer's Disease in humans. It is not surprising that this is the case since that liver is diseased. In the future, many more human diseases may be linked to the consumption of Foie Gras. It does not bode well... Yes, birds are paying a high price for this delicacy - with their lives. And humans with their lusts for exotic tastes are paying an equally high price - with their health. It is high time that the production and consumption of diseased organs is ceased forthwith and that we make this world a better place for all concerned, leaving animals in peace, and promoting human health. With love, light and hope for all animal liberation, Colleen McDuling, BSc (Med)(Hons), MSc (Med. Sc.), Animal Behaviourist. View other articles & news by Colleen McDuling
